There are a variety of reasons why a car A/C stops working, some more serious than others. This is why it’s important to look out for any signs such as it’s taking longer for the air to cool down or the air doesn’t come out as strongly as it used to. Let’s go over some of the top diagnostics and what to watch for.

Blocked Cabin Filter

One of the easiest fixes if your A/C is only blowing warm or moderately cool air. In some cases, it might just be time for a cabin filter replacement. When the cabin filter is too dirty, the air can’t move through it sufficiently. Replace the cabin filter first to see if that helps.

Leaking Refrigerant

The hoses used in a vehicle’s A/C system can sometimes develop holes, so the refrigerant used to cool the air leaks out. You’ll notice the air doesn’t get as cold as it once did or the pressure is lower so the air doesn’t come out as strongly. Sometimes you can spot the leak if there’s oily substances gathering around an area; otherwise, it might be difficult to spot the issue without an expert’s help.

Blocked or Broken Condenser

The condenser works by re-cooling hot air that enters through the front of the car when you drive. By compressing it, your A/C system can properly cool the refrigerant and maintain the cold air that keeps you cool on those hot days. The condenser can get blocked, however, by debris that comes from that outside air. Most of the time you should be able to see if there’s blockage on the grill, but sometimes it makes it through. If that happens, the condenser may be broken due to the debris getting inside of the unit and damaging some parts, which will then need to be replaced.

Bad Parts

Your A/C system needs tune-ups and replaced parts too, which is why preventative maintenance is so important. The cooling fans, hoses, or compressor parts will not work as well over time due to wear and tear or disuse between seasons. Sometimes it’s just time for a spruce up.
